ND Pro-Lifers Rally at the Supreme Court
On December 1st, 2021, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, a case on the constitutionality of a Mississippi law that bans most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The case is a significant and historic challenge to the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that invented a constitutional right to abortion within the United States. The following reports offer details and further explanation of this landmark case.
North Dakota Can Executive Director, Amber Vibeto, attended the Empower Women Promote Life Rally on the steps of the Supreme Court along with ND Right to Life Executive Director, McKenzie McCoy, and State Director for Concerned Women for America, Linda Thorson. Thousands of people on both sides of the issue were there to make their voices heard on this historic day. Unsuprisingly, the media downplayed how many were on the pro-life side and dismissed them as religious fundamentalists. However, it seemed that the majority were there to stand for life, and they came from a wide array of political, religious, and philosophical beliefs. Democrat, progressive, atheist, feminist, and secularist speakers joined with Christian conservatives to make the argument for ending abortion. Youth had a strong presence with Students for Life and Liberty University. These young people truly are the “prolife generation” and they are determined to abolish abortion in their lifetime.
North Dakota has a Trigger Law which goes into effect if the Supreme Court rules in such a way that our Attorney General recomends to the legislative council that the "Act would be upheld as Constitutional”. At that point, most abortions would be illegal in North Dakota. There will be exceptions allowed for protecting the life of the mother or if the pregnancy resulted from “sexual imposition, sexual abuse of a ward, or incest”.
