House Bill 1532
Relating to private school tuition reimbursement
What will this bill do?
Establish an educational reimbursement program for expenses of students accepted and enrolled in private schools.
Private schools would not be required to alter the school's creed, practices, admissions policy, or curriculum to receive reimbursement for qualified education expenses.
Ultimately, this bill fails to provide universal school choice and only benefits those who currently have access and are accepted to private schools in their community. Compared to the Educational Savings Accounts other states are implementing, this bill is unnecessarily weak and misses a big opportunity to open the door to true educational freedom for all students in North Dakota, not just a select few.
Why is school choice needed?
As less than half of North Dakota students are proficient in English and math, itβs clear that public schools are failing students and taxpayers. The vast majority of credible evidence shows that school choice programs improve academic outcomes for not only the program participants, but also the students in public schools. School choice leads to competition. Competition leads to excellence. Excellence leads to success.
What is the current status of this bill?
HB 1532 was vetoed by Governor Burgum, but the House was unable to override the veto on April 25th.
