Parental Rights in Public Education
House Concurrent Resolution 3049 was passed during the 67th Legislative Special Session in November 2021 and recognizes parents as the chief stakeholders of the future and education of their children
Concurrent resolutions are generally used to express the sentiments of legislators, but in a non-binding way as it does not have the force of law. HCR 3049 is a recognition that parental rights are being threatened in this country and is a clear message to the federal government that North Dakotans respect the fundamental right and responsibility of parents to be the primary directors of the upbringing, education, and care of their children without the unwelcome influence from activist educators and government overreach.
Why was this resolution needed?
The National School Board Association recently tried to silence concerned parents by weaponizing the Department of Justice and the FBI against them. The association of legitimate protest with terrorism and violence reveals a contempt for parental authority as well as the extreme lengths those in power will go in order to silence any and all dissent. Newly released internal memos show that the Biden Administration colluded with the NSBA in this effort to weaponize the full force of the FBI and Department of Justice against law-abiding citizens exercising their right to advocate for their children.
National headlines such as the one from The Washington Post (“Parents claim they have the right to shape their kids’ school curriculum. They don’t.” ) reveal a pervasive and purposeful undermining of parental rights and responsibilities.
There is a growing movement to make homeschooling appear dangerous and extreme. Some are even calling for an outright ban. Leftists believe that the state's influence and values should supercede those of parents.
ACTION STEPS
Contact the ND School Board Association and ask them to discontinue their membership to the National School Board Association (NSBA). The ND School Board Association released a statement distancing themselves from the letter, but this does not go far enough. Ask them to join with the 26 other states that have cut ties completely with the NSBA. The NSBA's apology came only after public backlash and does not reflect their true agenda.
UPDATE: On June 17, 2022, the ND School Board Association board of directors voted not to renew membership in the NSBA.
Contact your local school board members and ask them to sign a resolution similar to HCR 3049 recognizing parents as the primary stakeholders of their child's education.
